White Denim, All You Really Have to Do/Mess Your Hair Up Live from Nigel Godrich’s basement
Holy crap. I’ve never heard these guys play live before. I expected it to be good. Not this good, though. Holy crap. I’ve already watched it four times. I mean, look how he plays that guitar like a bass at the end. Holy crap.
In light of Quantum of Solace being released tomorrow, November 14th, here in the United States and my life-long fascination and dream of being a super awesome secret agent (Who doesn’t?) I’ve compiled a short little list of some pretty cool real-life spy stories:
Ian Fleming - Ian Fleming, author of the original James Bond series of books, was a secret agent. Sure, history likes to say he was a “Navy intelligence officer,” but I would disagree. Fleming was extremely athletic, spoke a multitude of languages, was extremely well connected and very smart. He was also in control of a group known as the 30 Assault Unit during WWII, a group of specialized commandos who worked in small groups to gain close access to enemies… Sounds pretty spy like to me. But the most interesting fact here is that he was a member of Camp X which is now known as Intrepid Park in Canada. But at the time it was a camp used for training spies. Obviously the man was doing some very spy like things. Some have questioned his death of a heart attack in 1961 as perhaps foul play.
Sir William Stephenson - William Stephenson was the basis for James Bond. After the joining the the Canadian Infantry, joining the Royal Flying Corps, and coming out of WWI as a highly decorated Captain, he moved to England where he became an extremely well connected and successful industrialist. He began his spy career by supplying information on the growing Nazi threat to Winston Churchill. Through this Churchill later sent Stephenson to America to covertly set up the British Security Coordination. This would later become MI-6. Stephenson became a close adviser of FDR which allowed him to seize one of his mission objectives, which was to create American favor towards the British. He also set up Camp X. One of the craziest things about Stephenson, though, is that he’s also the basis for Goldfinger!! His plan, though obviously never carried out, was to steal - using secret agents - $2,883,000,000 in gold from reserves in the french colony of Martinique. Awesome.
Sidney Reilly - Sidney Reilly was a British spy who was extremely talented at his job. Reilly was very extravagant and very James Bond like as in he had his way with many, many women. Some of Reilly’s spytastic feats were: Clandestinely approaching William Knox D’Arcy (on the French Riviera) in disguise and manipulating him so that D’Arcy would return to England and re-negotiate petroleum sales when it was realized that Oil would be replacing Coal as a main source of Energy; Retrieving top-secret new technology developed by other countries for England; Infiltrating German weapon factories and stealing top secret weapon designs; Being a Secret Agent behind German lines during WWI; Helping overthrow Vladimir Ilyich Lenin; Pretending to be a Russian weapons dealer as to steal Dutch weapon plans; Worked for the Japanese as a timber company owner stealing Russian secrets and supplying them back to the Japanese; Seducing countless women to get secrets; and breathlessly saving British Diplomats held hostage in Brazil. Reilly was murdered after being tricked and captured by Russians in 1925. Story has it that he actually escaped but was captured again and shot in the woods near the Finnish border.
“Tricycle” - Tricycle - also known by his actual name, Dušan Popov - was a double agent as a spy for Germany but working for the British and feeding them information about German activities. During WWII he became aware through various means that the United States was going to be attacked at Pearl Harbor. He even contacted the FBI but was ignored!! Other spy qualities Popov showed were that of being a very talented ladies man.
“Stakeknife” - Stakeknife is a spy who infiltrated the IRA working for the top secret British Force Research Unit. He smuggled tons of information into British hands including a large list of murders carried out by the IRA. He was such an important agent that MI5 set up an office dedicated solely to providing back up and information to him.
“April Fool” - April Fool is the code name that was given to an American secret agent working as a Diplomat in Iraq. April Fool sold an Iraqi Intelligence agent false top secret documents that outlined, apparently, the US Military’s plans to attack various parts of Northern Iraq. Weakened due to the Iraqi military being deployed elsewhere, Baghdad fell and Saddam Hussein’s regime collapsed.
“Their idea is, in broad outline, straightforward. Dr. Crespi and Dr. Badcock propose that an evolutionary tug of war between genes from the father’s sperm and the mother’s egg can, in effect, tip brain development in one of two ways. A strong bias toward the father pushes a developing brain along the autistic spectrum, toward a fascination with objects, patterns, mechanical systems, at the expense of social development. A bias toward the mother moves the growing brain along what the researchers call the psychotic spectrum, toward hypersensitivity to mood, their own and others’. …
In short: autism and schizophrenia represent opposite ends of a spectrum that includes most, if not all, psychiatric and developmental brain disorders. The theory has no use for psychiatry’s many separate categories for disorders, and it would give genetic findings an entirely new dimension.”
"The society may be drowned in lusts, steeped in low passions, rolling in filth and dirt, thinking that it has enjoyment and freedom from chains and restrictions. Such a society may become devoid of any clean enjoyment and even of lawful food, and nothing may remain except a rubbish heap, or dirt and mud. The Believer from his height looks at the people drowning in dirt and mud."
A quote from the above-mentioned website (and originally from Sayyid Qutb, I think). The Believer magazine has been all over the Qutb/Strauss connection, especially pushing Adam Curtis’ documentary The Power of Nightmares, which in part details the connections and parallels between the Jihadist and Neoconservative movements. So, like, slightly ironic, is all I’m trying to say.

Barack said that Malia is allergic to dogs so they will need a hypoallergenic breed, but that they want to get a shelter dog. He wasn’t sure whether they would be able to find a hypoallergenic shelter dog.
This is your queue, shelters of America, to send pictures of any hypoallergenic dogs you might have! I really want the Obamas to get a shelter dog!!! No $1000 labradoodles, please!!!
I think it’s very admirable that they want to get a shelter dog. They make for the best pets. I’ve had two shelter dogs in my lifetime and they’ve been great companions.
Technically there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, though some breeds (recognized or not) do shed much less, which kinda helps.
Did you hear the one about the budding sci-fi writer? His workshop teacher told him his characters needed to be more psychologically compelling, so he writes a story about a guy with a microchip installed in his brain.
